Yoga, Service, Adventure
Puerto Viejo de Talamanca is a beautiful town located on the Caribbean side of Costa Rica, just over 250 miles south of San Jose with an easy and naturally stunning commute. We will pass through the chilly heights of Braulio Carriollo National Park, the steamy lowlands of Guapiles, the Caribbean port town of Limon, many banana plantations and then follow the palm-fringed coastal road south by the beach of Cahuita and to Puerto Viejo.
Our groups stay at Samasati Nature Retreat nearby. This stunning retreat is located on a 250-acre biological reserve overlooking the Caribbean. Sitting amidst the famous Costa Rican rainforest, your bungalow offers some of the most unique views of the Caribbean Sea. The retreat features yoga studios, Jacuzzi, sundeck, cocktail bar, open air restaurant, and massage therapists on staff. Samasati offers an array of activities for nature lovers, yogis, and anyone looking to relax in an exotic environment.
Participants wake up to the sound of howler monkeys, yoga, and fabulous food at every meal. Our schedule has a wide variety of activities including zip-lining or horseback riding, swimming, hiking, yoga, visiting an animal rescue center, an optional river rafting and a day of service.
You may choose to zip line through the jungle or horseback ride on the pristine beach of Punta Uva. During the canopy tour you will zip from tree to tree in the jungle. There are 15 stations where you will enjoy approximately two hours of zip lining, a Tarzan swing, and walking in between several of the platforms.
A morning at the Jaguar Animal Rescue Center will give you the opportunity to see a wide variety of animals up close. There is plenty of beach time at two of the most beautiful beaches in the area.
An optional white river rafting excursion is offered on your return trip to San Jose. The Pacuare River is world-famous for its beauty. A true river gorge, it is flanked by steep, green walls. You will see waterfalls cascade into the river from both sides. Wildlife is abundant. It is not an overly challenging river, but it has many rapids that will make your adventure interesting and fun! The 18-mile, one-day-run includes 38 rapids, something few rivers in the world can offer you. National Geographic has named it one of the top ten river rafting excursions in the world.
Our global project and service work on our retreats is in Carbon I, a small village five miles inland from Puerto Viejo, Costa Rica. There are about 750 inhabitants spread throughout an area of approximately two square miles. It is a high-need area with children and their families that we have come to know and love. Dinners with one of the local families the last night in the rainforest is usually a highlight for many of our travelers.
Participants spend an afternoon at our International Center for Girls doing a variety of activities, including teaching English, reading books, and implementing educational enrichment stations. We encourage our travelers to share their interests, skills, and talents with “our girls”
The yoga practices on our International Retreats are for all levels. Yoga helps with flexibility, strength, balance, and endurance as well as relieving stress and increasing focus. Most participants return from these retreats revitalized and have a greater awareness of the benefits of a regular yoga practice.
Our trip leaders teach yoga every morning before breakfast and afternoon before dinner in the beautiful, tranquil spaces at Samasati specifically dedicated to the practice of yoga.
